Our Positions
We don't shy away from the issues that matter most to Walton County. Here's where the WCYR stands.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY
Walton County homeowners have watched their property tax burden rise sharply — not because the millage rate jumped overnight, but because skyrocketing property values have quietly increased what residents owe. In the county's most recent budget cycle, the Board of Commissioners approved a millage rate increase to 12.278 mills — the highest in a decade — to fund new facilities and expanded government services.
We believe Walton County government should grow only as fast as taxpayers can sustain it. Before new spending is approved, officials should exhaust every efficiency, consider the cumulative burden on young families and first-time homeowners, and make the case transparently to the public. Our state legislative delegation has already introduced legislation to cap city tax increases at the rate of inflation — we support that effort and call for the same standard countywide.
WCYR Position
We support limiting year-over-year property tax increases, requiring full public transparency in the budget process, and ensuring new development pays its fair share through impact fees so existing residents don't shoulder all the costs of growth.
EDUCATION & PARENTAL RIGHTS
Walton County schools outperform Georgia state averages — a 94% graduation rate versus the state's 87%, and math and reading proficiency above state benchmarks. That's worth protecting. But good outcomes today don't mean parents should be cut out of decisions about their children's education tomorrow.
We believe parents — not school boards, not federal bureaucracies — are the primary stakeholders in a child's education. That means transparency in curriculum, meaningful parental input in school governance, and the freedom for families to choose the educational environment that works best for their child, whether that's a public school, charter school, private school, or homeschool.
WCYR Position
We support Georgia's school choice initiatives, parental notification and consent requirements, and local school board accountability. We oppose any effort to centralize educational decision-making away from Walton County families.
RESPONSIBLE GROWTH
Walton County is projected to reach 153,000 residents by 2060 — a nearly 40% increase from today. People are moving here from Gwinnett, from Atlanta, and from across the country because they want exactly what Walton County offers: affordable land, safe communities, good schools, and a quality of life that's harder to find closer to the city.
The challenge is managing that growth without losing what made people want to move here in the first place. That means protecting rural character, demanding that developers fund the infrastructure their projects require, investing in roads and public safety before density outpaces capacity, and saying no to sprawl that doesn't serve existing residents.
WCYR Position
We support strong impact fee requirements, developer accountability, infrastructure-first growth planning, and preserving Walton County's small-town identity as the county grows.
PUBLIC SAFETY
Walton County's new Public Safety Complex represents a major investment in the infrastructure of law enforcement — and a recognition that public safety is a core function of local government. We support fully funding and staffing the Sheriff's Office, DA's office, and emergency services. We support our first responders, and we believe community trust in law enforcement is built by consistent, professional, accountable policing — not by defunding or demoralizing it.
WCYR Position
We fully support Walton County's law enforcement community, oppose any effort to cut or redirect public safety funding, and believe strong public safety is the foundation on which everything else — economic growth, education, quality of life — is built.
ELECTION INTEGRITY
Georgians have passed meaningful election integrity reforms in recent years, and Walton County voters have consistently supported candidates who prioritize secure, transparent elections. We believe confidence in elections is essential to a functioning republic — and that means clear voter ID requirements, accurate voter rolls, secure chain of custody for ballots, and meaningful transparency in the counting process.
WCYR Position
We support Georgia's existing election integrity laws, oppose efforts to weaken voter ID requirements, and call for continued investment in election security infrastructure at the county and state level.
